Refinishing kitchen cabinets can be a great way to update your kitchen without investing in a complete remodel.
Cabinets are an essential part of the home and have a significant impact on how your home feels. Refinishing is a great option if you’re looking for an easy way to update your kitchen.
Here are some things you should know about refinishing kitchen cabinets:
Detailed Steps of How to Refinish Kitchen Cabinets
Here’s everything you need to know about refinishing your kitchen cabinets to ensure a flawless and beautiful result:
Remove the cabinet doors and drawers
First, number your doors and drawers, so you know exactly where each one goes. Even if all the drawers look the same, slight differences may cause issues once you put your freshly painted cabinets back together again.
- Begin by removing all of the hardware from the cabinets. If there are any screws left in place, remove them with a screwdriver or drill. This will make it easier to lift out the doors later on and keep them from falling out when you’re trying to hold everything back while painting.
- The next step in refinishing kitchen cabinets is to remove any hinges that hold up your cabinet doors by unscrewing them and pulling them off their posts. If you have one or two cabinets with pantry doors that open inward instead of outward (as most other cupboards do), then you’ll need to remove those hinges first before continuing with step 3 below!
- Finally, lift each door one by one and set it aside somewhere safe where no one can step on it or get hurt by tripping over it (like inside an empty garbage bag or something similar). Then take off any remaining screws holding down your drawers using a screwdriver.
Wash and prep all surfaces of your kitchen cabinets
First, wash and prep all surface that you will later paint. Thoroughly wash all areas of the cabinets with a good cleaner, and let it dry. This will remove ingrained dirt and help paint and other sealants adhere to the cabinet surfaces.
Sand the kitchen cabinets down
Sanding the cabinets is the first step to restoring your cabinets to their former glory. Use 120-grit sandpaper to sand down your cabinets, including shelves and doors. This will remove any scratches, chips, or splinters that might be present on the surface of your kitchen cabinets. If you have a lot of damage or a deep scratch, you can use higher grit sandpaper such as 150-grit or even 180-grit sandpaper to remove more material.
Once your cabinets are completely dry, apply two coats of primer to each side of each cabinet door and drawer front (not including inside faces).
If you’re using satin-finish paint, you can skip this step, but if you’re going for a high-gloss finish, it’s best to apply a coat or two of primer.
You should apply the first coat at no less than 12 inches from the surface and the second coat at no less than six inches from the surface. Primer helps seal the wood and fill in any cracks or imperfections on the surface. It also acts as an undercoat, allowing your paint to stick better and last longer.
Once you have completed priming, it is time to move on to the next steps in refinishing kitchen cabinets—painting!
Apply paint color coats
Next up is painting over top of the primed kitchen cabinets with two coats of latex paint, one for each side of each cabinet door and drawer front (again excluding inside faces).
Again, make sure not to apply too much at once so as not to drip or cause other issues during application. Wait 15 minutes between coats for the best results!
